Power Rangers is a long running franchise of television series, chronicling the adventures of teenagers or 20-somethings who transform into superheroes. It began in the 1970's in Japan alone, and was re-formatted for Europe and the United States in the mid 1990's
The concept is based on a series of yearly serials called Super Sentai, but it is not just an English dubbed version. It is in reality, a totally new production, that is filmed with English speaking actors. The new footage is then incorporated into the original Japanese footage. The stories and design of the origional Sentai version are very Japanese in nature, therefor, the American shows must always be slightly changed for the Western audience.
Each generation of
Power Rangers, features a group of teenagers, who aquire super powers to fight villains, and their henchmen. To activate their powers, the
Power Rangers must morph by performing an action and reciting a call. The series centers around the Power Rangers learning the importance of teamwork and perseverance, as they destroy the monster that has been unleashed upon them.
Power Rangers usually operate in teams of five. Often a special sixth Ranger completes the group. Sometimes, it will start with a team of three which will later be joined by additional Rangers. Each Ranger's suit will match a specific color, with blue, yellow, and red being the main characters to be joined by some assortment of pink, green, black, or white. The team's costumes are nearly identical aside from color and perhaps a number designation; the special Rangers will have some other modifications on their costume.
Each team of
Power Rangers need to obey a general set of rules outlined at the start of the origional Mighty Morphin
Power Rangersand implied, throughout the other incarnations. The
Power Rangersare not allowed to use their Special powers for personal gain, and the
Power Rangers are forbidden to disclose their identities to the general public. The penalty for disobeying these rules, at least in Mighty Morphin
Power Rangers, is the loss of their power.
The arsenal available to the
Power Rangers is also somewhat standardized: each Ranger is generally armed with a
Power Rangers Weapon such as a
POWER RANGER BLASTER or a
POWER RANGER SWORD. Each Ranger also has a secondary set of weapons that can often combine to form a larger weapon. As the series progresses, one or more of the
Power Rangers are also usually given a motorcycle for long-distance travel. In some cases one Ranger may receive something that other
Power Rangers do not have, for instance, the Battlizer that has been given to the
Red Ranger of each series since Power Rangers In Space.
